Critical Response #1
Description
In "Avant-Garde and Kitsch", Clement Greenberg offers an influential
history of the emergence of "high" (avant-garde) and "low" (kitsch
or popular) culture. He argues that popular culture is deceptive, often masquerading
as "genuine" culture. This poses a threat to avant-garde culture.
Describe in your own words the difference between "genuine"
(avant-garde) culture and kitsch, as articulated by Greenberg in this essay.
In what sense does he think popular
culture is a
threat to high culture? Is this a legitimate concern? Do you agree with Greenberg's
position? Why? On what basis? What are your reasons?
Note: Given that this is such a brief critical response, I suggest that you do not quote or refer to other authors. Stay close to Greenberg's text in your analysis and response.
