Writing Exercise #3: Semiotics
Description
This is an optional writing exercise for those of you who are interested in improving your skill in semiotic analysis and interpretation. Unlike the last assignment, in this one you should proceed in a strictly orthodox and academic manner making it clear to the reader precisely when semiotic concepts are being applied.
Your task is to provide a descriptive analysis and interpretation of this photograph. Be sure to incorporate reference to the following:
1. denotation
2. connotation
3. sign, signifier, and signified
4. syntagmatic relations such as above/below, in front/behind, close/distant, left/right, center/periphery
5. paradigmatic substitution
6. iconic, indexical, and symbolic signs
If it is higher, the grade on this assignment will replace the grade on the previous assignment.
Deadline
Essays are due at the beginning of class on Monday 28 November 05. Late papers will not be accepted.
