Assignment: Critical Analysis

I would like you to write a critical response to one of the articles listed below. You may want to deal with the article on its own terms or you may want to discuss the article in the context of other readings and theories examined this semester. I'll leave it to you to decide which approach to take. Please review the handout entitled "Critical Response" before beginning work on your paper. Let me know if you have questions about it.

• Salecl, "The Sirens and Feminine Jouissance"
• Zizek, "From the Sublime to the Ridiculous: The Sexual Act in Cinema"
• West, "The New Cultural Politics of Difference"

Papers are due at the beginning of the class on

• 13 April 2000 if you are writing on either Salecl or Zizek
• 20 April 2000 if you are writing on West.

All papers must be typed on a computer and run through a spell-checker. You will be graded on the form and content of your paper, so pay close attention to both appearance and grammar. All papers must be double-spaced with one-inch margins with the appropriate endnotes or footnotes (as you prefer). If you need additional instructions or guidelines, see me.
