ASSIGNMENT: DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS

This is a brief exercise in close descriptive analysis and the restatement of an argument. I want you to reconstruct in your own words the central argument contained in Greenberg's article entitled "Avant-Garde and Kitsch". Keep your summary brief. One or two pages is sufficient to present the main components the argument.

Be sure to read carefully the handouts entitled "Analyzing a Text" and "What is an argument?" in preparation for this exercise. If you have questions about the nature of an argument or the analysis of a text, please let me know.

Papers are due at the beginning of the class on 10 Feb 2000.
Late papers will not be accepted.

All papers must be typed. You will be graded on the form and content of your paper, so pay close attention to both appearance and grammar. All papers must be double-spaced with one-inch margins with the appropriate endnotes or footnotes (as you prefer). If you need additional instructions or guidelines, see me.

Please submit only the text of your paper.
Do not use cover sheets or plastic report covers.
